presbyopia

Presbyopia is a refractive error caused by loss of accommodation due to reduced elasticity of the crystalline, the natural lens of the eye, due to age.

This condition affects 90% of adults over 45 years and causes blurred vision or distorted objects that are nearby.

Presbyopia is caused by aging and the natural degeneration that the eye suffers over the years.

En Área Oftalmológica Avanzada We explain what presbyopia is and how to correct it.

What is presbyopia or eyestrain?

The lens is the natural lens of the eye and allows us to sharply focus images at all distances.

Over the years, the ocular structureLike the rest of the body, it degenerates and the lens loses elasticity and, therefore, its ability to accommodate.

When the lens begins to reduce its contraction capacity and optical power, the Presbyopia or eyestrain.

It is a refractive error associated with old age that is characterized by causing blurred or distorted vision of objects at close range.

Presbyopia or tired eyesight is a condition that cannot be prevented and affects all adults from the fourth decade.

It is important to attend ophthalmological reviews when the 40 years have been reached.

As measured?

To diagnose and measure presbyopia, a routine check of visual structure and refraction is carried out.

The tests may include measuring the eye strain, study of the anterior and posterior eye area and analysis of the visual acuity.

The ophthalmologist can detect if the lens of the eye has lost elasticity through the eye strain test.

This test is very simple, it consists of the patient reading a text that the doctor has placed 35 cm away.

The difficulty or effort to read the image correctly are signs of presbyopia.

When is the test recommended?

When a person presents symptoms of presbyopia The tired eyesight test should be performed.

The symptoms of this condition are:

  • Distorted vision of objects that are at a close distance.
  • Tendency to move objects away to focus.
  • Difficulty seeing correctly in spaces with poor lighting.
  • Need to use more artificial or natural light to be able to read, write, sew or increase the brightness of the mobile or tablet.

How is presbyopia corrected?

The most common method for correcting presbyopia is with the use of contact lenses or glasses.

Also exist surgical treatments for presbyopia, along with other refractive defects such as myopia or astigmatism.

The main techniques for presbyopia operation are:

  • Laser surgery to mold the cornea and compensate for the loss of lens accommodation.
  • Placement of an intracorneal lens to combat near distorted vision.
  • Pseudophakic intraocular lens implant that replaces the lens.

Who does presbyopia affect?

Presbyopia affects almost all adults over 40 years of age, reaching 90% of the adult population over 45 years of age.
