What are palpebral spasms?

Eyelid spasms are contractions of the Eyelids that cause the tissue to quiver or close rapidly. These moves are involuntary and they do not affect vision.

In most cases, tremors in the eye are caused by a picture of tiredness and stress. These spasms are almost always harmless and temporary. If they occur permanently, it is important to see a doctor to rule out neurological conditions.

Why do I have a tic on my eyelid?

The causes of eyelid spasms can be many, the most common are the following:

  • Tiredness, lack of sleep and fatigue. Having a bedtime routine or catching up on sleep can go a long way in combating eyelid tremor.
  • El Stress It is the most common cause of eyelid twitching. It is important to combat stress by exercising, avoiding recurring overtime work, and practicing relaxing activities, such as meditation.
  • El excessive use of digital screens can cause eye strain and trigger eyelid spasms. To prevent visual fatigue When using the computer, it is recommended to rest your eyes every 20 minutes for 20 seconds.
  • Caffeine and alcohol consumption can cause eyelid twitching. Avoiding consuming these substances in excess or reducing their intake can be of great help to eliminate tremors.
  • People suffering ocular dryness They usually have palpebral spasms. In this case it is important that the ophthalmologist examine the eyes and prescribe the suitable treatment for dry eye.
  • Eyelid spasms can be a symptom of eye allergies.

The neurological causes of eyelid spasms are:

  • El blepharospasm: is a condition that causes the involuntary closing of both eyelids due to a nerve impulse.
  • Hemifacial spasm: This condition occurs when the muscles of the face become excessively tense. Hemifacial spasms can start around the eye and affect other parts of the face.

Treatments for tic disorder in the eye

Eyelid twitching is a fairly harmless annoyance that usually goes away on its own and without treatment.

There are few occasions when the tremors do not disappear. When this happens, it is important to go to the ophthalmologist to examine both ocular structures and determine the cause of this event.

The most effective treatment for persistent tremors is injections of Botulinum toxin. By injecting the toxin, the muscle that is causing the spasm relaxes and the tremor disappears after a day or two.

The application of botulinum toxin is indicated as a treatment for blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. The effect of these injections lasts approximately three months.

If treatment with botulinum toxin does not have the expected effect and the spasms affect the patient's quality of life, the option of performing minor surgery can be evaluated.
