Gonioscopy is a diagnostic test that is performed to determine if the angle where the iris with the cornea es amploose and open or narrow and closed.

The main objective of this test is to detect angular anomalies, for this reason it is one of the best techniques for the ophthalmologist to know if a glaucoma It is open angle or closed angle.

Gonioscopy is part of the list of ophthalmological examinations that should be performed on patients with glaucoma to monitor the progress of the disease.

En Área Oftalmológica Avanzada We explain below what this test consists of.

gonioscopy

What is a gonioscopy?

Gonioscopy, also known as Neovascular Gonioscopy, is a medical examination that is done to study the amplititude of the angle found in the anterior chamber of the ocular structure.

This diagnostic test allows you to examine in depth the angle where the iris and cornea meet to determine if the angle is open or closed.

By performing this test, the ophthalmologist, in addition to identifying abnormalities, will be able to differentiate between a open angle glaucoma or with a angle-closure glaucoma.

A patient diagnosed with narrow-angle glaucoma should be treated immediately to prevent a possible rise in Intraocular pressure for angle-closure glaucoma.

How it is performed?

To perform a gonioscopy, the ophthalmologist must previously anesthetize the patient's eye with the use of anesthetic eye drops.

Once the patient's eye has been anesthetized, the ophthalmologist places over the eye to examine a lens for gonioscopy. This lens usually has three mirrors inside to be able to perform the scan, although only one is used.

Through this lens, the glaucoma specialist will be able to examine the angular structure to check if the angle between the iris and the cornea is closed and blocked or amprolls and opens.

A narrow angle is an indication of acute glaucoma and an open angle is an indication of chronic glaucoma.

The test lasts a few minutes and does not pose any risk or pain to the patient.

However, it is recommended that the person who is going to perform the gonioscopy be accompanied, as the effect of anesthesia can last up to 2 hours after the exam.

When is gonioscopy recommended?

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the health of the eye structure and can cause blindness at its most advanced stage.

People diagnosed with glaucoma must have a thorough monitoring of their condition to prevent the early progression of the disease and early loss of vision as it does not present symptoms.

El neovascular glaucoma is a type of secondary glaucoma characterized by the formation of new blood vessels in the iris and in the iridocorneal angle.

These capillaries block the circulation of the aqueous humor y significantly increase intraocular pressure or IOP.
