La dacryocystitis is the inflammation of the lacrimal sac caused by an obstruction in the lacrimal passages, which generates excessive and constant lacrimation. The dacryocystorhinostomy is a surgery that is done to correct that epiphora that occurs when the nasolacrimal canal becomes blocked.

Dacryocystorhinostomy aims to create a new channel for tear drainage from the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity. In Área Oftalmológica Avanzada We explain what a dacryocystorhinostomy consists of and when it is necessary to perform this surgery.

dacryocystorhinostomy

What is dacryocystorhinostomy?

Dacryocystorhinostomy or DCR is an eye surgery indicated in patients with tear duct obstruction. This operation aims to stop the epiphora or excessive lacrimation by creating a drainage channel from the lacrimal sac to the nose, using the patient's own tissue.

Dacryocystorhinostomy is a frequent treatment in ophthalmic centers and offers excellent results in cases of dacryocystitis and other tear duct obstructions.

The surgery is carried out in a ambulatory and under the influence of a Anesthesia local. During the procedure, silicone tubes are placed in the tear ducts that will be removed three months after the intervention. These tubes help shape the new drainage channel so that the tear is disposed of properly.

When is it necessary?

Dacryocystorhinostomy is a surgery that is indicated when there is obstruction of the tear duct below the lacrimal sac, that is, where the tear is collected so that it begins its entire journey to the nose.

It is usually carried out in patients with watery eyes or excess tearing due to a obstruction in the nasolacrimal canal

Is dacryocystorhinostomy effective?

Dacryocystorhinostomy is a very safe and predictable operation to correct excessive tearing in patients with lacrimal duct obstruction. In 95% of cases the new drainage channel it works perfectly and the patient is able to correct the watery eyes and the visual discomfort caused by tearing.

Postoperative

After undergoing a dacryocystorhinostomy, the patient can go home with the eye covered and must remain covered for 24 hours. The day after surgery, you should go to an ophthalmological check-up to examine the ocular structure and check that the drainage system is working properly.

It is important to adhere to the postoperative guideline. In it, we usually include antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories after surgery to achieve a quick recovery and reduce the possible discomfort that may arise. Prescription medications can be topical and / or oral.

After 2 weeks after the operation, the patient must return to the consultation to examine the healing and check that the tear is permeating correctly. The next check-ups will be at 4 and 12 weeks after surgery and at 6 months. In most cases, the silicone tubes are removed at the doctor's office at week 12.

The definitive results of a dacryocystorhinostomy can be seen in the first month and a half after the operation. In Área Oftalmológica Avanzada we have the best professionals to perform a dacryocystorhinostomy. Visit us without obligation and we will treat you in the best way!
