En Área Oftalmológica Avanzada We explain what autologous serum is and when it is used.

autologous serum

Autologous serum is an eye drop that is made from the patient's blood and containing diluted vitamins and platelet-rich plasma. For that reason, it is very beneficial to treat different eye diseases.

It is a more effective eye drop than any other, since we managed to achieve a regenerative therapy with biocompatibility. This means that the serum has very similar characteristics to natural tears, which allows it to reduce inflammation, allergies and pain.

When it's used?

Autologous serum is used in ophthalmology mainly for the treatment of Dry Eye, as it manages to hydrate the eyes naturally and improves the composition of the tear film

In addition, this blood serum is rich in growth factors that help to naturally regenerate tissues of the ocular structure. Some benefits of autologous serum are:

  • Promotes cell growth and regeneration
  • Strengthens the immune system and helps prevent infection
  • It is rich in growth factors that help regenerate tissues such as the cornea.

The use of autologous serum in ophthalmology is also recommended to treat other infections such as corneal ulcers o keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis and during the postoperative cornea transplant

To prepare the autologous serum, it is important that the patient suspends the consumption of anticoagulant drugs, at least three days before of the preparation date.

The procedure for preparing the autologous serum is as follows:

  • A blood sample is drawn to the patient.
  • The blood sample is placed into a centrifuge machine
  • The centrifuge will separate all the contents of the blood so that the doctor can obtain platelet rich plasma
  • He separates the sterilized plasma rich in growth factors.
  • Plasma is mixed with physiological serum and packaged.

Once the autologous serum is obtained, the medical specialist must tell the patient how long to use the serum and how many drops of it to apply in each eye. In most cases, it is recommended to apply the serum 6-10 times a day.
