What is anisometropia?

Anisometropia consists of a high diopter difference between the two eyes.

The most common is that there is a slight variation in graduation that the brain compensates as much as possible. But when this difference is important, there is blurred vision, Since each retina captures a very different picture.

As we have said, there can be cases in which anisometropia appears in adults. This can be due to different causes, such as the retinal detachment, the development of one eye of a different size than the other, or a miscalculation in the implanted intraocular lens.

Types of anisometropia

There are three types of anisometropia that can occur:

  • Simple anisometropia: It occurs when one eye is emmetropic (normal eye), so it presents a correct vision, but the other has myopia o farsightedness.
  • Composite Anisometropia: It is the case in which both eyes have the same refractive defect, but with a very different graduation.
  • Mixed Anisometropia: each eye has a different refractive error. For example, one eye is hyperopic and the other is myopic.

Causes that cause it

As we have seen when analyzing the different types of anisometropia, this problem can be due to various reasons:

  • That one eye is emmetropic and the other myopic or hyperopic.
  • That both eyes have the same refractive error, but to a very different extent each.
  • Each eye has a different refractive error.

Eye diseases related to anisometropia

The eye diseases that are associated with anisometropia are those related to ocular motility, strabismus and amblyopia u lazy eye.

When an adult or a baby has anisometropia, the image that is formed in each of the eyes is different. When these images reach the brain via the optic pathway, it can select the one that it considers to be the best to identify the outside world, originating what is known as amblyopia or lazy eye, squint Or a combination of both, strabismic amblyopia.

Another condition associated with anisocoria is aniseiconia. This eye disease occurs when the images that are projected on the retina are of different sizes. This size difference can also generate, eyestrain or asthenopia, migraine ophthalmic, ocular migraine, headache, ocular neuralgia or even diplopia or double vision.

Recommended treatment

To determine the appropriate treatment for anisometropia, the difference in graduation between the two eyes and the age of the patient must be taken into account.

This first analysis is especially important in the most severe cases, so that there is not a very high difference in the size of the retinal images (aniseikonia).

If there is less than four diopters difference, glasses with lenses that have different prescriptions can usually be used to correct the refractive error of each eye separately.

But, if we are facing a case of severe anisometropia, it is essential that the correction is closer to the eye, which is why the use of contact lenses is usually recommended.
