I have read that contact lenses desensitize the cornea, which leads to dry eye. They can also produce corneal edema, photophobia, keratitis,... These pathologies, do they remit when you stop wearing contact lenses or are they irreversible?

In addition, its maintenance is normally carried out using unique solutions. They all have preservatives, some like EDTA,... , which when placed come into contact with our eyes. Do these sensitize our eyes? What can they cause?

Good night, I have had a toric lens implanted in my right eye, after 6 months I have always noticed some rays of light that come from the car headlights, lampFor the sake of it and even sun glare, I know I also had a bit of astigmatism that was corrected with glasses, but even so, the situation remains the same, my question is, is there a solution for this? or is it simply a side effect that will stay forever, thank you very much, I have attached an image of what these reflections look like

Hello and thank you for submitting your ophthalmology question to our forum.

It must be taken into account that contact lenses are still a foreign body in contact mainly with the cornea, therefore it can favor erosions, corneal ulcers, etc.

Also, as a chronic effect, the continued support of the lens on the cornea ends up reducing its sensitivity, which can cause inflammation and corneal edema.

By using contact lenses responsibly, all this is avoidable and certainly when you stop using them, they are changes that can be reversible.

As to lens maintenance, the contact specialist who has carried out the adaptation is the most appropriate professional to advise on their maintenance and cleaning kit or, in the case of using disposable lenses, they would not require any type of cleaning.

We hope we have been of help.

Greetings,
