History of Mapfre

MAPFRE was born in 1933 as the Mutualidad de Seguros of the Group of Rural Estates of Spain in order to insure the workers of the agricultural holdings. From 1955, the foundations of the entity as we know it today are laid, extending their activity, initially, to other insurers such as Life, Accident or Transportation.

During the 70 decade, the international strategy with Assistance and Reinsurance activities as the spearheads of the Insurance business began in Latin America. In 1975 FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE starts its activities and in the 80 years, MAPFRE -which was already the first insurance company in Spain- consolidated its Latin American commitment with an important investment effort, which would culminate in the 90 with the creation of an insurance network that served to local particularities and was similar to the Spanish success model.

From the 2000 year, the acceleration of the growth of MAPFRE's companies in Latin America began to be perceived, an effect that was combined with the diversification of marketing channels in Spain. At 2007, a reorganization was carried out that provided a corporate structure and a financial capacity that allows amplinking activities and international expansion. FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE became the majority shareholder and the guarantor of the independence of the new company MAPFRE SA, entity that integrates all the Group's activities.

Since then, the Group has been boosted with a commitment to geographic diversification and markets with high growth potential, such as the United States and Turkey. In 2012, Antonio Huertas assumed the Presidency of the Group, a multinational insurance company with presence in more than 45 countries on five continents.
