Importance of Dry Eye
The tear is responsible for protecting, nourishing, moisturizing and lubricating the surface of the eye, provides nutrients for the cells of the ocular surface and contributes to the system of defence of the eyes. This works like oil in a machine, so that in the blinking it passes smoothly over the eye without “scratching” or damaging it.
How do I know if I have Dry Eye?
Dry eye syndrome causes irritation, stinging, redness and foreign body sensation or grit on the eye surface, as well as fatigue or heaviness in the eyelids or tearing.
Although it may seem contradictory, excessive tearing is due to inadequate and insufficient ocular lubrication. Our body is protected by “flooding” the surface of the eye with tears of poor quality that do not provide the necessary nutrients and protectors.
Causes of Dry Eye
80% of cases of Dry Eye are due to what we know as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. These glands of the eyelids become clogged and their fat content builds up inside causing irritation. The tear is left without the nutrients and the natural lubricant and the surface of the eye will be damaged, especially when contacting the air when tear film ruptures.
Risk factors for dry eye
- Hormonal alterations
- Environmental factors (dryness and wind)
- The use of contact lenses
- Systemic diseases
- Antidepressant drugs
- Eye surgery (refractive surgery and cataract surgery)
Its multifactorial origin makes its diagnosis and treatment difficult.

thermaeye (L.I.U.R.) and Dry Eye
The IPL laser serves to stimulate Meibomian glands painlessly and without an operating room. It stimulates blood flow and acts on the nerve endings that control the production and secretion of lipids (fats).
Probing the Meibomian glands
It is a non-invasive surgical procedure to open the outlet conduct of the Meibomian glands, extract the fatty contents from the inside and apply an antibiotic to normalize the microbial flora. It is painless and is performed with superficial sedation.
Eyelid margin exfoliation and Glandular drainage
They consist of removing the membrane that caps the Meibomian glands (exfoliation) and then a massage to empty the contents of the glands, applying cold and antioxidants to reduce inflammation of the eyelids and irritation at the end of the procedure.
Nutrition and Dry Eye
Recent studies suggest that a poor diet is also a risk factor for the appearance of Dry Eye.
Diets low in omega 3 and antioxidants, and those rich in omega 6, produce oxidative stress that generates inflammatory effects on the Meibomian glands, cornea and conjunctiva.
Aware of this, Area Oftalmologica Avanzada has incorporated nutrition experts among its ranks to help patients more personally.
