Distichiasis

Distichiasis is a rare disorder characterized by ectopic growth of eyelashes in unusual parts of the eyelid margin as, for example, the holes of the Meibomian glands.

Distichiasis can trigger significant visual problems and discomfort such as irritation y corneal trauma. Also, it can be congenital or acquired and usually appears after a major inflammatory process.

What is dystiquiasis?

Dystrichiasis is a disorder that occurs when new eyelashes are born in areas near the eyelid edge where they normally shouldn't be. It forms a second row of tabs (large or small) between the row of eyelashes and the free edge of the eyelid.

In parallel, the growth of these eyelashes can occur in places as rare as the Meibomian gland holes, causing significant visual discomfort and eye irritation.

In people with dystiquiasis, the eyelashes grow so abnormally They can form new rows and affect the conjunctiva.

When distichiasis is severe, it can also damage the structure of the cornea or the inner part of the eye.

Congenital dystrichiasis

This type of distichiasis is a very rare anomaly that occurs when the newborn has rows of eyelashes behind the eyelid edge. These eyelashes can grow abnormally on the lower and upper eyelids, and are much finer and lighter than normal eyelashes.

El constant rubbing of the eyelashes on the corneal structure can cause significant health problems in the newborn such as corneal ulcers o ocular dryness.

For this reason, whenever there is corneal injury, it is necessary to propose a treatment and eliminate eyelashes from the eye structure.

La congenital dystichiasis it can affect the upper and lower eyelidWhile acquired dystiquiasis mostly affects the lower eyelid

dystiquiasis

Distichiasis and trichiasis are the same?

The dystiquiasis and the trichiasis They are disorders that affect the normal growth of eyelashes, but they are two different conditions.

La difference between dystiquiasis and trichiasis resides in that, patients with dystiquiasis they have tabs that grow in areas of the eyelid that are not common and people with trichiasis they have tabs that grow into the eye.

Causes of dystiquiasis

Distichiasis is mainly caused by chronic inflammatory processes that have affected the ocular structure, such as trichiasis.

Some diseases associated with dystiquiasis are:

  • Cicatric pengifoid eyepiece.
  • Syndrome Steven Johnson.
  • Conjunctivitis Induced by chemical or toxic agents.
  • Lymphedema-dystichiasis.

Main symptoms

The symptoms of distichiasis can be very varied, but the most frequent are:

  • Throbbing pain in the ocular structure due to the irritation of the conjunctiva and the rubbing of the eyelashes with the cornea.
  • Redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva due to the rubbing of the eyelashes with the fabric.
  • Conjunctivitis that affects the ocular structure by inflaming the conjunctiva and causing other annoying symptoms such as pain or excessive tearing.
  • Excessive tearing by the rubbing of the eyelashes, which activates the tear zone.
  • Eye dryness It can get worse due to irritation and pain when you open and close your eyes.
  • Blurred vision or vision problems.

Recommended treatment

At the time that a person begins to notice the growth of eyelashes in unusual areas of the eyelid edge, he must go to the ophthalmologist to undergo a study of the ocular structure to analyze the treatment options for the symptoms of dystiquiasis.

Dystrichiasis is a condition that there is no definitive cure, the treatment consists of offering solutions to the patient to improve their quality of life, prevent the eyelashes from rubbing against the cornea and preserve eye health.

Among the treatment options is the use of eye contact lenses, which are placed on the patient to protect the cornea from rubbing the eyelashes. Also usually opt for mechanical or electrical hair removal of the eyelashes that cause the problem.

The treatment of dystiquiasis is aimed at remove hair follicles where abnormal eyelashes are born, and this can be achieved through the following options:

  • Hair removal Periodic eyelashes.
  • Argon laser cauterization when the eyelashes are not very numerous.
  • there are different surgical techniques for dystiquiasis which, depending on the case of each patient, can contemplate total and definitive elimination of the row of eyelashes.
