La cantoplasty is a surgery that is performed to reposition the lateral canthus, outer corner of the eyes where the lower and upper eyelids meet. This surgery can be combined with other procedures to improve the skin of the eyelids, remove excess tissue or rejuvenate facial expressions.

What is cantoplasty?

La Canthoplasty is a surgery that is performed to raise the lateral canthus after the descent of this part of the eyelid. The outer corner of the eyes where the upper and lower eyelids meet is known as the lateral canthus.

The decrease occurs due to aging and loss of skin tone. Canthoplasty can be combined with other procedures to further enhance the aesthetic appearance of the eyes. The lower eyelid skin can appear much tighter if a canthoplasty is performed in conjunction with an orbiculopexy or orbicularis muscle tightening.

Cantoplasty can also be accompanied with a blepharoplasty lower transconjunctival, eyebrow lift and from the middle of the face or entropion and ectropion correction surgeries.

When is canthoplasty surgery indicated?

Over the years, the body reduces the production of elastin and collagen, substances responsible for the elasticity and firmness of the skin. As a consequence, the skin begins a process of aging, loss of tone and formation of folds and wrinkles

One of the effects of aging is sagging skin of the eyelids that affects the lateral edge, causing it to fall. This directly affects the shape and appearance of the eye, as it results in a more tired and less attractive look. Also can cause vision problems, partially covering the eye and reducing the campor sight. What's more, some people have to lift their eyelids with their hands in order to see well.

cantoplasty

Cantoplasty is a surgery indicated to patients who want improve cosmetic appearance of his droopy eyes, a condition better known as ptosis or periocular flaccidity. It is capable of reducing eye bags that occur with aging and creating an almond or cat's eye shape, achieving a firmer look.

The operation, in addition to aesthetics, can also have medical purposes, since lower eyelid malposition may need to be corrected due to blepharoplasty or trauma at any age. Cantoplasty surgery also has medical purposes beyond the aesthetic ones when we perform it to solve the problems of campor of vision that we have mentioned previously.

Pre-operation exams

Before performing an external ocular canthoplasty, it is necessary that the specialist in oculoplastic ophthalmology study the entire ocular structure. In this way, you will be able to determine whether or not the patient is a candidate for this operation.

How does canthoplasty surgery work?

There are two types of canthoplasty surgery, lateral and epi-canthoplasty. The first operation is the most common and it is the one that we will explain in more detail below.

La lateral canthoplasty It is a surgery that is performed on the lateral area of the eyelids and is quite simple. Have a duration of 1 to 2 hours, and is performed under the effects of local anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure, where the patient can go home the same day of the operation

canthoplasty before and after

Lateral canthoplasty consists of performing a small cut on the eyelid, specifically in the crease of the upper eyelid, which exposes the lateral edge. By making the incision, the doctor can release the tendon of the lateral canthus to bring the lateral of the lower lid higher and thus make it tight again. The incision made to correct the lateral edge is completely camouflaged, which is why the scar is imperceptible

The final results can be seen one month after the procedure. Specifically, your eyes will appear wider and slightly tilted up.

There is also another alternative operation called epi-canthoplasty, much less common. Here the inner corner of the eyes is reshaped and it also lasts for 1 to 2 hours.

Postoperative canthoplasty

After surgery, we cover the operated eye for at least 24 hours. The patient must maintain a antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment during the days that the doctor considers necessary.

In the event that the patient presents a great inflammation during the postoperative period of the canthoplasty operation, they should go to the ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Parallel, the patient can apply ice for the next 48 hours external canthoplasty to prevent further inflammation.

The before and after a cantoplasty is really surprising, because the aesthetic improvement offered by this surgery is spectacular, especially in cases of ptosis or droopy eyes. Therefore, if you have ptosis, canthoplasty will mark a before and after in your life, improving your appearance and your campor vision.

Other alternative treatments

In case you don't want to have an eye canthoplasty, there are some less invasive techniques. For example, the cantopexy It is a technique that uses sutures to tighten the tendon of the lateral canthus, managing to stabilize it.

This technique is much less invasive than canthoplasty, since it does not cut the tendon, in addition to having shorter recovery time. However, it is often accompanied by other forms of surgery on the lower eyelids and not usually done in isolation
